Admiralty, London England
4 October 1814
The following day, George was invited to the Admiralty by Admiral Pellew to meet with senior officers. George had liked the man; he had found him honest and a man of action. He was impressed by the many changes implemented in the Royal Navy, using the advice of Admiral Hill. Flogging had been abolished, and a professional force's enlisting and training had begun. Admiral Pellew had helped push them through.
Once at the Admiralty, George noticed what looked to be a C130 aircraft parked to the north of the main building. British army engineers were smoothing out a long strip like a makeshift runway. That had to be the plane that brought the British troops to 1814, and it looked like they were getting ready to fly it out. Walking into the grand building, George was escorted to the meeting chambers where several senior officers were sitting around a table, one of them he noticed was Admiral Cockburn. âGentlemen may introduce General George Poulos. He is President Madisonâs peace envoy.â
âWhat peace? One rammed down our throats? We lose Canada and have to pay the Americans for damages?â Said Admiral James Hawkins-Whitshed.
âThe Americans dared to capture one of our ships and bring it back to Portsmouth and sell it back to us,â said Admiral Sir John Duckworth, the former governor of Newfoundland.
âGentlemen, we attacked an American warship under a flag of truce and killed and wounded some of their crew. The Americans defended themselves. The captain of the Achilles was a fool attacking an ironclad. George was about to speak, but Admiral Pellew raised his hand.
âThey can be defeated with the proper tactics. I have already proven that,â said Admiral Cochrane speaking for the first time as he stared at George.
âYou were lucky, admiral. The American captain did not have steam up and allowed himself to be swarmed by two steamships. He should have blown you out of the water,â George commented.
âThere is always the element of luck in war. Your captain gambled, and he lost. I gambled and won. I will not support these humiliating peace terms. We can beat you or make it so costly that you will ask for more honorable peace terms,â said Cockburn.
âYou invaded the United States while discussing peace terms with you in good faith. You caused millions of pounds in damages to both New Orleans and Charleston. Your sneak attack woke up America just as the Japanese did in 1941. The nation wants revenge. President Madison does not want revenge; he wants peace.â
âSneak attack? We were still at war with you.â
âThere was a truce, and we were negotiating in good faith.â
âIf you want peace, give back Canada and drop the financial reparations.â
âThat will never happen, admiral. We will bring the war to you and defeat you. You were lucky to escape Charleston before you were bombed to oblivion.â
âYou American upstart!â Admiral Cockburn was starting to get out of his seat. âThatâs enough, gentlemen! We are not here to argue with each other.
